Visual and UX/UI platform design for MDW Hack 2023, the Milan Digital Week hackathon focused on smart cities, innovation, and sustainability.

Context

MDW Hack 2023 is the hackathon hosted during Milan Digital Week, an event that explores innovative solutions for smarter, more sustainable, and more inclusive cities. Participants, mentors, and partners collaborate on environmental, social, economic, and cultural challenges through a practical and creative approach, fostering gamification, teamwork, and concrete ideas to transform Milan into a city of the future.

Visual

The visual identity is characterized by the Milano Digital Week 2023 red, evocative and dynamic, designed for a multi-platform, tech-oriented experience. The graphic elements are animated, bringing the message to life and strengthening cross-device communication, from the digital platform to event materials. The visual identity combines energy, innovation, and modernity, in line with the creative and technological spirit of the hackathon.

Platform

The platform was developed with a fluid, smooth, and welcoming design, aimed at facilitating registration, topic exploration, and participation in the hackathon process. The interface highlights the timeline, mentor profiles, and partner information, guiding users through a clear, dynamic, and intuitive digital experience optimized for multiple devices.

Accessibility

The platform is developed in accordance with WCAG guidelines, supporting text scaling, adjustable line spacing and kerning, ARIA labels, and navigation compatible with screen readers, ensuring inclusive and compliant usability.

Motion Design

To support the hackathon’s social media communication, motion content was developed to highlight the dynamic and innovative nature of MDW Hack 2023. Smooth animations, rhythmic transitions, and moving graphic elements brought the event’s visual identity to life, adapting it to different digital formats — stories, reels, teasers, and promotional content.

My takeaways

Working on MDW Hack 2023 allowed me to engage with a flagship event and a highly diverse audience. I deepened my work on new visual languages and cross-device animations, learning to translate complex concepts into engaging and dynamic digital experiences, while strengthening my skills in UX/UI for tech events, smooth interfaces, and multi-platform communication.
